This case is nicknamed the "McLibel" case. In the case of McDonald Restauran vs Morris (top right, person on the left) and Steel (person on the right) these two were handing out leaflets with negative information about McDonald's. As a result McDonald's sued the two on account of Britain's libel laws. Let it be noted there was no legal aid for Morris and Steel and they were not very wealthy. The trial began in 1994 and would end in 1997 making it the longest court case in the history of England. In the end the judge ruled that the team of Morris and Steel had not been able to prove all of the accusation they brought against McDonald, but did however manage to prove most of it so they just had to pay part of the damages. The team went on to bring this to Europe's highest court: European Court of Human RIghts. They sued the UK for not providing a fair trial and on their libel laws. In the end the court ruled that UK was in the wrong on both accounts. Click the button to move on to the next case.
